Our top-of-the-line preamplifier. By using high quality discrete transistors (no ICs!) we managed to get a clean and  easy-to-listen-to sound with a very low noise level. The built-in RIAA stage for vinyl player pickups is a real gem. Very low noise, and a high degree of detail without sounding hard. Not the typical "IC" sound many preamplifiers have.
Despite the small outside there are over a hundred components inside, we have not cut any corners just to make things easier for us. Our first priorities are as always sound quality and reliability, even if it means many discrete components instead of just a few as if we hade used integrated circuits. (As most do these days.

Very important during the covid-19 pandemic:
We cannot, unfortunately, deliver our products to all coutries and regions with our normal shipping company, PostNord. They use storage on passenger airlines to ship packages, and as many passenger flights are cancelled during the pandemic, they cannot deliver packages to many countries until the airline traffic becomes normal again.
There is a list of coutries to which they can ship packages, by air, boat, train and trucks. This, however, also affects transportation time a lot. We sent a package to New York, U.S. and the normal shipping time is 4-6 workdays, but it took 1½ months to reach our customer, and a package to southern France (normally 3 workdays) took three weeks.
So, here is the list to which package can be sent by PostNord, but be prepared to wait a while:

If your country is not in the list, and we still handle the package over to PostNord, they will keep it in storage and ship it when airlines "open up". And that can take quite some time.

Valutronic is a family business, run by only two persons. We do all soldering by hand for maximum reliability.
Building and testing the amplifier, do all paperwork et.c. takes several hours.
As we also have to take care of the shop, ship packages to customers and do all computer work (like this website) the production capacity is very limited.
Therefore, do not try to send us any payment without first consulting us via e-mail.  We will reply and tell you when your kit will be ready for shipment, and send you a PayPal Money Request. If the payment has arrived in time, the shipping will be carried out on the agreed date.

The Preamp 2 has three line inputs (2 x 500 mV, 1 x 125 mV) and one RIAA input (adjustable 0.8 - 8 mV).
The on-off switch you see to the right is for the RIAA amplifier. If you don´t connect anything to the RIAA input the high sensitivity and high input impedance 47 kOhm) can cause hum and noise. Therefore, if you have no vinyl record player the RIAA amplifier part of the Preamp 2 should be off. Therefore the switch. It is nothing you keep switching on and off, it is normally only changed when you connect or disconnect a record player.
No power switch. Why?
The Preamp 2 and its power supply unit draws about 0.4 W in total. At 15 US ct per kWh this means an electricity cost of 53 ct per year. So, unless during a thunder storm, there is no reason to turn it off. (And during thunderstorms you should unplug all electronics from the wall sockets anyways!)

The two 500 mV inputs will match most DACs, computer sound cards, CD- and DVD players, TVs et.c.
The 125 mV input is for units with lower output like smartphones, tablets and some laptop computers.
The RIAA input is for MM pickups and some high output MC types as well.

The output signal is typically 1000 mV at low impedance, making it suitable for most power amplifiers, including (of course) the Poweramp 5.

The cutoff frequency for the bass control is relatively low, and relatively high for the treble control.
This was done to prevent them from distorting the midrange. The Preamp 2 bass control only changes the bass volume, the treble control only changes the treble volume. As we think it should be. Therefore you can increase the bass on low bass recordings without getting the lower midrange too strong. Likewise you can decrease the treble when playing a hissy or scratched vinyl record without loosing too much of the higher midrange.

But... where is the input selector?
This is one thing that really sets this preamplifier apart from almost all others. There is no input selector.
And there is a very good reason for that. First of all reliability. If you want a zero distortion switch, it has to be mechanical. But mechanical switches deteriorate. Both mechanical wear and oxidation will eventually make them unreliable and finally fail.
We tried a lot of options until we suddenly started thinking "out of the box".
Your ears have no "input selector". They listen to all sounds all the time. But you only turn on one item at the time. Your computer OR your DVD player OR your CD player OR your TV...
Similarly, a preamplifier does not have to select sound source. "In the old days" when one listened to MW radio, tape recorders, cassette decks and other equipment that produced a background noise, you had to use an input selector. Not to select the sound source, but to de-select all the others. Even if a tape or cassette player was paused, it still had a rather high hissing noise. So, if you wanted to listen to the radio, you had to de-select the other inputs to avoid mixing the radio program with the noise from all other things connected to the amplifier.
But these days things dont make noise when paused or off. There is no need to de-select something that does not produce any sound.
So, the Preamp 2 "listens" to all inputs at once. Turn on your computer and you hear the sound from the computer. Turn it off and turn on your CD- or DVD player instead, and you hear the sound played from them. Turn them off and turn on your plugged in smartphone and you get that sound instead. There is no need to approach the preamplifier to switch between sound sources. The RIAA part of the Preamp 2 (when connected to a vinyl record player) is also very silent. No need to de-select unless you don´t have a pickup connected. But then you have the RIAA Switch.
So, one of the biggest issues when an amplifier gets old -- worn out switches -- is gone. No power switch, no input selector. And the RIAA switch will probably live longer than the owner of the amplifier, as it is almost never used!

The sound quality is excellent, the noise level very low, and all details in the music are there, making the sound very enjoyable. A preamplifier for music lovers and audiophiles, but at a reasonable price.

So, if you want a preamplifier with really high quality sound, but you don´t want to pay ten times as much in an exclusive Hi-Fi shop, this is it.
